Road Marking

Soda lime glass beads are a vital component in achieving retroreflectivity for various types of road surface markings. Retroreflectivity is achieved when incoming light from vehicles is refracted within the glass beads embedded in the road markings and then reflected back into the driver's field of view. In North America, an estimated 227 million kilograms of glass beads are used annually for road surface markings. During the remarking of a five-lane highway system, approximately 520 kilograms of glass beads are used per mile, and road remarking typically takes place every two to five years.

The high demand for glass beads in the United States has resulted in the importation of beads from countries that employ outdated manufacturing regulations and techniques. These techniques involve the use of heavy metals like arsenic, antimony, and lead as decolorizing and fining agents during the manufacturing process. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that these heavy metals become integrated into the glass matrix of the beads and can potentially leach out under environmental conditions encountered by roadways.

Efforts are being made to address this issue and promote the use of environmentally friendly glass beads that adhere to modern manufacturing standards. The goal is to ensure that the road marking industry can meet its demand for glass beads while minimizing any potential environmental impact.
