Runway Designation, Threshold, Aiming Zone Markings

There are three types of markings for runways: visual, nonprecision instrument, and precision instrument.

Runway Designation Markings

Runway numbers and letters are determined from the approach direction. The runway number is the whole number nearest one‐tenth the magnetic azimuth of the centerline of the runway, measured clockwise from the magnetic north. The letters, differentiate between left (L), right (R), or center (C) parallel runways, as applicable:

1. For two parallel runways “L” “R.”

2. For three parallel runways “L” “C” “R.”

Runway Threshold Markings

Runway threshold markings come in two configurations. They either consist of eight longitudinal stripes of uniform dimensions disposed symmetrically about the runway centerline or the number of stripes is related to the runway width. A threshold marking helps identify the beginning of the runway that is available for landing. In some instances, the landing threshold may be relocated or displaced.

Runway Aiming Zone Markings

The assignment of runway numbers and letters is based on the approach direction and aims to provide clear identification for pilots. The runway number is determined by selecting the whole number closest to one-tenth of the magnetic azimuth of the runway's centerline, measured in a clockwise direction from magnetic north.

To differentiate between parallel runways, letters are used to indicate their positioning:

  • In the case of two parallel runways, the letters "L" and "R" are employed.
  • When there are three parallel runways, the letters "L," "C," and "R" are used to distinguish the left, center, and right runways, respectively.

These designations assist pilots in quickly identifying and communicating about specific runways, enhancing safety and clarity in airfield operations.
